For AJE Journalists being threatened by employers for posting here
I have just read the story 'Focus On Al Jazeera' in the 16th Feb - 1st Mar edition of Private Eye.
The following info may help any journalists who want to inform the rest of the community of any 'sensitive' issues going on at AJE, with a sense of some security and privacy.
You can browse and submit posts anonymously by using Tor. Tor is software provided by the EFF (Electronic Freedom Foundation - http://www.eff.org). You can get Tor at http://tor.eff.org. It is extremely easy to install and use.
Tor works by hiding your IP address - the address of your computer in simple terms. If you post from a work machine, it has an IP address that could fairly easily be traced at least to your organisation, if not your actual computer.
Tor passes your data via a number of different machines distributed across the globe. The first machine knows you sent the data, but not what it is or its final destination. The second machine knows that the first machine sent the data, but knows nothing about you or the destination. The destination machine knows that the previous machine sent the data, but nothing about you. You can therefore post to this board without your IP address being logged here.
I do not know if this also prevents your workplace monitoring where you browse to. It would be best to check this with the EFF first before using at work.
Please do read the EFF and Tor sites; they will give you a good idea of how to continue to protect your free speech and the flow of information that we all rely on to keep us informed.
Please pass this information on to anyone you feel might be interested.
Regards,
Nuj.
