Al Jazeera Boss Denies Pushing Islamist Agenda
Singapore (AHN) - International broadcaster Al Jazeera insisted on Wednesday it is not pushing an Islamist agenda, as it rejects reports the network shows footage of hostages being beheaded by terrorists. According to its managing director Nigel Parsons, accusations hurled against the network were just accusations based on a "repeated lie that quickly became accepted as fact."
Parsons said in a conference at the Global Brand Forum in Singapore, "We have never and would never show a beheading," and added that Al Jazeera is an alternative voice in the global media.
Parsons also assured subscribers in Singapore they would get the same programming content other countries were receiving.
The network gained global attention after airing exclusive footage from international terrorist Osama bin Laden after the 911 attacks in the U.S.
It was also gained notoriety for showing videos of hostages, mostly Western nationals, being held captive by al-Qaeda militants.
Parson defended the broadcast network and adds, "We're not pushing a Muslim Islamist agenda," and said that even the al-Qaeda accused them "of being pro-Israeli CIA agents".
The broadcaster, which reaches 90 million homes worldwide, has applied for a license to broadcast in Singapore.
