Illegal Immigration

Submitted by solimon246 on Wed, 2007-04-04 13:24.

Really, It was horrible and painful to hear about the humanitarian scandal concerning what the Greek state marine guardians did a couple of months before with some illegal Arab immigrants (about 17 of youth) who tried to enter illegally a Greek island to search for better life in Europe, however the guardians exposed them to torture during arresting procedure, not only that but also cuffed their hands and then threw them in the sea nearby the Turkish cost to dispose of their dirty crime "kindly know that due both the codes of international law and Rome convention this crime is classified as a collective torture crime or genocide crime".

Sex & AIDS

Submitted by solimon246 on Wed, 2007-04-04 13:21.

Everybody due the title here above will be chocked and think by mistake that I'm going to write something about the eroticism, but it's not.

In February 2006 here in Alexandria precisely at the French Cultural Center in collaboration with "the African Development University (l'Université Senghor)" a conference about AIDS had been held for two days, so as usual the Egyptian presence was very limited, however there were a lot of good topics and ideas had been presented, there were some global agencies and organizations like IRD, CEDEJ, UNDP, Pasteur Institute of Paris and many others were represented in that conference to show up their presentations and experiences about this critical topic based on perfect statistics, data and information, there were also a lot of unique thesis from the side of scholars of the department of the public health at Senghor covering most of the Francophone African member states, there were also some NGOs representation like Caritas.

For AJE Journalists being threatened by employers for posting here

Submitted by NUJ on Sat, 2007-03-03 02:10.

I have just read the story 'Focus On Al Jazeera' in the 16th Feb - 1st Mar edition of Private Eye.

The following info may help any journalists who want to inform the rest of the community of any 'sensitive' issues going on at AJE, with a sense of some security and privacy.

You can browse and submit posts anonymously by using Tor. Tor is software provided by the EFF (Electronic Freedom Foundation - http://www.eff.org). You can get Tor at http://tor.eff.org. It is extremely easy to install and use.

Al-Jazeera English channel

Submitted by colin mafham on Thu, 2007-02-08 13:45.

Hello everyone

I've noticed the news on the Al-Jazeera English channel only seems to be live for half the day.

I thought it was meant to be a 24 hour news channel? Am I right?

If yes - does anyone know when the channel is going to be live for 24 hours a day?

Many thanks
Colin

Peres Must Be Laughing All The Way To The (West) Bank

Submitted by jason adams on Thu, 2007-02-01 18:20.

Was anyone else out there dissappointed by Al Jazeera International's interview with the Israeli Deputy Prime Minister?
The presenter failed to challenge him even once, despite the fact that Peres unloaded a cart load of PR spins and untruths.

The presenter did not bother to take the questioning further even when Peres admitted Israel made a 'mistake' by dropping cluster bombs on civilians. Mistake? You would have expected the next question to be: Mistake! Is that what you call the deaths of over a thousand civilians? Or: So when are Israeli leaders going to stand trial for violating international law?

TRANSLATION PLEASE

Submitted by Mike 1947 on Tue, 2006-12-12 23:21.

The Editor of Al Jazeera, Ahmed Sheikh, in his recent interview stated that,
'For what is happening in Palestine, we never use the expression "suicide bombing." ...

Literally translated, we would speak of "commando attacks." In our culture, it is precisely not suicide.'

Could someone please help me with the anglicised Arabic for 'commando attack' (ie not in Arabic script.)

This would help me enormously in the writing of my thesis.

Website Dreadful

Submitted by Nigel Parsons on Sat, 2006-12-09 07:23.

What is the English website supposed to be for? It is pathetic. Doesn't even give you the day's AJE schedule. Nor transcripts of Riz, Frost interviews (except very few). Nor even a half-decent news roundup. Any reader who chooses to go there, rather than BBC News, will be disappointed and fail to return.
Pull your socks up, webfolk. The sometimes pretty good channel content is woefully let down b

Finally

Doha executive editor John Bayliss is being investigated by Al Jazeera International legal affairs for alleged managerial and financial impropriety.
It is believed they have been asked to investigate on several levels.
This is said to include his original application and full employment history.
People from the top are asking the question if this man has rudimentary journalism, basic technical know-how and indeed any of the real management background required for a senior position as he has in AJI.

P&P is original and El Feki is a breath of fresh air.

Submitted by Simon on Fri, 2006-11-24 01:50.

Shereen El Feki has spark and charm.

As a media insider I think that she is doing a fantastic job and the shows are getting stronger.

I am delighted that AJI took a bold step by putting an erudite, ex-Economist journalist in front of the camera. This sets her firmly in the category of the handful of hosts – men and women – who can write their own scripts, discuss topics from a macro point of view and think on their feet. Hey! I give the lady credit – for a first-timer in front of the camera she is doing remarkably well.

Steve Clark theatens to resign

Submitted by haroldlloyd on Wed, 2006-11-15 17:52.

Well,congratulations are in order.

The channel is indistinguishable from the BBC except for being able to report from Zimbabwe,

So what's it been like in Doha?

Well, Nigel Parsons has been rewarded for his much delayed work: he's been signed up for two more years at the channel.

But there was a brief moment when Al Jazeera English threatened to truly challenge the world order of news: Steve Clark, head of news and director of programming threatened to resign. What was it over, you might ask? Was it that he wanted a racist, anti-Arab voice on? Was it that he wanted all bulletins to emphasise the first killing of an Israeli since July even MORE? Was it he wanted even more crap Australian half hour documentaries that wouldn't look good on a student channel?

The great defender of free speech

Submitted by Nikki on Tue, 2006-11-14 11:35.

Hi all

I feel people should know that in my inbox I have received a message from the poster, Harold Lloyd.

Now Harold and I have had a few frank and full discussions on the boards and I'm sure it's clear I'm not his greatest admirer.

However, I have now found a message with Thanks in the title and 'for that...i know where you live.' in the body of the message.

Why else would someone send something like this uness it was to frighten or intimidate me? Perhaps Harold could tell us all exactly what he meant by the message. It wasn't to send flowers now Harold was it?

The launch approaches

Submitted by haroldlloyd on Thu, 2006-10-26 17:59.

Well, from what I hear..things really are in a mess. Some staff have cleverly left, having picked up tens of thousands of pounds for doing virtually nothing in the pre-launch period.

Steve Clark has no idea how to produce a progressive channel and is, at the last minute, grabbing any idea he can. Since Paul Gibbs has been fired, Clark has been commissioning boring programming rejected by other UK channels. Even then, he is giving tiny amounts to new companies and loads of it to established monopoly providers who are laughing all the way to their banks.

Getting In Touch

Submitted by Hugh Mann on Mon, 2006-10-23 21:30.

How does one get in touch with people at Al Jazeera? As examples: a web address to send e-mails in "American" English (English); a phone number to call where I can speak to someone and find myself understood in English; a physical location of an office one may visit and expect to speak to someone, in the United States. If located in New York, even better.

As a U.S. Citizen who finds "himself" under attack from the TSA (Transportation Security Administration}, with little reasonable prospect of protection, either through suitable U.S. media coverage, including follow-up, or through the "American" form of justice, I hope to reach out with my "story" to a news organization that may provide a more reliable venue to express my situation.

Any news on new Al-Jazeera channel?

Submitted by colin mafham on Wed, 2006-10-18 16:58.

I keep reading about Al-Jazeera's new 24 hour channel and all the people they're signing up .... but I've not heard anything for ages on when it's actually going to start?

I read a while back they were looking to start at beginning of November but haven't heard anything since!

Can anyone here suggest when the channel will begin/when the people in charge are looking to start it?

Al-Jazeera International hiring practices?

Submitted by Jamal Abdul Raziq on Mon, 2006-09-18 21:20.

Does AJI have an informal policy of hiring predominantly whites? I have noticed the applications of qualified individuals whoses names reveal a non-white background not receiving a reply, whereas whites with mediocre experience getting hired. Please share any info.
